When is the Chinese Lunar New Year Parade? The Year of the Fire Horse - February 22, 2026
In the Chinese zodiac, those born in the Year of the Horse are often described as independent, energetic, cheerful, and charismatic. They tend to be natural leaders and entrepreneurs, known for their enthusiasm and strong social presence.
The Horse is the seventh animal in the 12 year zodiac cycle. Recent Horse years include: 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, and 2002. The 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac cycle, in order, are the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (Sheep), Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig, with each animal representing a year in a repeating 12 year cycle that is also paired with one of the five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water forming a complete 60-year cycle.
The 60 year cycle of the Chinese zodiac is more detailed than simply repeating the same 12 animals. It is based on the combination of two traditional systems: the 12 Earthly Branches, which represent the 12 zodiac animals (Rat through Pig), and the 10 Heavenly Stems, which represent the five elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, each expressed in a yin and a yang form. Because the animals cycle every 12 years and the elemental stems cycle every 10 years, they move forward together one step at a time. It takes 60 years for both systems to realign in the exact same combination, which is why the full zodiac cycle lasts 60 years.
A year is not simply “the Year of the Horse,” but something more specific, such as a Wood Horse, Fire Horse, Earth Horse, Metal Horse, or Water Horse. Each version carries a slightly different elemental influence and personality symbolism. For example, 1966 was a Fire Horse year. That exact Fire Horse combination will not occur again until 60 years later, completing the full cycle before repeating.
Why 60 years matters culturally? In traditional East Asian cultures, turning 60 is significant because you’ve completed one full zodiac cycle and return to the same animal-element combination present at your birth. In China and other East Asian societies, this is known as a major life milestone celebration.
So the 60 year cycle isn’t random. It is a precise mathematical rotation between animals and elemental forces.
