What’s Happening on the 4th of July
U.S. Capitol Visitor Center
On July 4, 2026, the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center hosts the Spirit of '76 Jubilee as part of the nation's 250th anniversary celebration. The event is free and open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
U.S. National Archives
The U.S. National Archives will celebrate Independence Day from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. with programming that includes a reading of the Declaration of Independence, live music, family activities, and an opportunity to view the original founding documents. Some of the programming require a free timed ticket.
Again, timed-entry tickets are strongly recommended due to extremely high demand. While admission is free, reservations help avoid long outdoor lines and provide a smoother entry experience. Walk-up visitors should expect significantly longer wait times.
Library of Congress
The U.S. Library of Congress and Smithsonian museums will be open on July 4, 2026, during regular holiday hours.

Military Flyovers
As part of Freedom 250 military flyover demonstrations are expected every hour until sunset beginning at 1:15 p.m. WTOP NEWS have the reported times of the military flyovers.
Independence Day Parade - Canceled Due to Extreme Heat
The National Independence Day Parade takes place at 10:30 a.m. along Constitution Avenue NW, from 7th Street to 17th Street. The 2026 parade marks the Semiquincentennial celebration of the United States.
Washington Monument Illumination
The Washington Monument is illuminated nightly from July 1 to July 5, 2026. The illumination are the projection of images on the surface of the Monument during this holiday celebration. On July 4, it will be lit from sunset (around 8:30 p.m.) through the fireworks display featuring historical imagery and patriotic projections. On July 1- July 3, 2026 and July 5, 2026 the projection is a 18 minute loop playing in sets and starts on the hour at 9 pm, 10 pm, 11 pm and 12 am.
Fireworks on the National Mall
The July 4 fireworks show begins at approximately 11:00 p.m. and lasts about 40 minutes. Viewing is available across multiple locations, not just the National Mall.

Getting Around with the Metro
The Washington, D.C. Metro is one of the easiest ways for visitors to get around the city, connecting major attractions, museums, neighborhoods, and airports. We put together a primer on How to Use the Metro
Metrorail operates from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. Metrobus runs on a holiday schedule with possible detours near the National Mall.
Fare is free on Metrorail, Metrobus, and Metro Access from 5:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Parking at Metro facilities is free all day. You can find service updates and other information at WMATA (Metro).
Expect extra trains after 5:00 p.m. Smithsonian Station may be exit-only or skipped due to crowding. Consider nearby stations such as L’Enfant Plaza, Federal Triangle, or Archives for easier post-fireworks travel.
Walking the National Mall
Due to Freedom 250 events (see list of what you should not bring if you are going) parts of the National Mall will be fenced off with controlled entry points and security screening. Some walkways may be rerouted or closed, requiring detours between museums and landmarks. Expect security checks for bags and large items, especially near the Washington Monument and main viewing areas.
Ronald Reagan National Airport
Flights at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport will stop after 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Saturday, July 4, 2026, to accommodate military flyovers, aerial demonstrations, and the evening fireworks. Flight operations are expected to resume on July 5, although travelers should check with their airline for any schedule changes or delays.
