A Guide to Carousels in USA
WDCTrips explores historic carousels across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and the United States, highlighting family-friendly attractions that blend history, craftsmanship, civil rights history, and cultural storytelling into accessible visitor experiences.
Carousels in the United States
Carousels, also known as merry-go-rounds, became widely popular in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their origins trace back to European cavalry training exercises, later evolving into decorative amusement rides brought to America by immigrant craftsmen. The “Golden Age of Carousels” (1880s–1930s) produced highly detailed wooden figures, ornate hand-carving, and mechanical platforms powered first by steam and later electricity. These rides became iconic features of amusement parks, boardwalks, and public recreation spaces, symbolizing leisure, craftsmanship, and family entertainment during a period of rapid industrial growth.
Carousels in the Washington, D.C. Region
The Washington, D.C. region did not serve as a major carousel manufacturing center, but it developed a strong carousel culture through public parks, trolley destinations, and waterfront recreation spaces. Maryland and Virginia in particular became home to historic and community-centered carousels that remain active cultural landmarks today.
Glen Echo Park Carousel (Maryland)
One of the most significant surviving carousels in the region is the Dentzel carousel at Glen Echo Park in Maryland, originally installed in 1921. This rare Golden Age carousel is still in operation and remains one of the best-preserved examples of American carousel craftsmanship.
